Best USB to SAS cradles or adapters

What are the best USB to SAS cradles or adapters that will allow me to connect a 3.5" SAS drive to my computer's USB port?

I have some SAS drives I need to examine and copy data from and need a solution I can quickly plug into any computer with a USB 3 port.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. A SATA to USB cable will not work since SAS needs a SAS controller. buy yourself a cheap PCie HBA and a set of cables instead

There is a solution that exists.  But is not very cheap.
CRU's Ditto Forensic Field Station.  I am not sure just ANYONE can buy it.

Here is their least expensive model at $1549:

The more EXPENSIVE model at like $2249:

The expansion module that gives you SAS at $349:

This company has GREAT service and technical support for their devices.

You can also test drive a Ditto here (However I do not think it has the SAS Adapter connected to it.  But you can get an idea to see if this device is something that may be of use or help for you and is worth it's price):

I've had first hand experience testing a Beta product about 5 year ago.   It is certainly one of the better Drive duplicating machines as well as drive viewer.  So this is certainly OVERKILL for what you are asking, but this device exists.  Something to think about for all your future needs as well.

Hey IT Guy,

If you do get one of these units, they are AMAZING!  Lots of features.  If you have questions about it in the future, feel free to call them.  They are pretty cool people.  And if you are in the area (Vancouver, WA) they will let you come demo it, or if you go to any of the technology shows and they are their they will let you demo it as well.

Wakeup,

What is the cheapest product available that will provide a USB to SAS cradle or adapter?

IT Guy,

That's sort of the problem.  SAS to USB is not really an easy solution to insert into an enclosure or adapter etc.  The drive itself needs a SAS controller to function.  Everything that's out there does not have a built in SAS controller.  Even the device I linked above will still need that SAS adapter (which is basically a SAS Controller).  That's the only thing I know of that works.  I beta tested the units before and have seen work.  I do not know of ANYTHING else that will be cheap.  The only other cheap option is to have a computer built just to read SAS drives.  You can get a SAS removable drive enclosure for ease of Inserting and removing the drive and even potentially hot swapping them.

Here's a link to a couple units that should work if you connect them to an Internal SAS connector on a computer's motherboard or controller card:

These are both under $150, but you still need to connect it to a SAS controller.

There are other devices that may be cheaper than these two units as well.  I am not familiar with them all.  Icy Dock makes one fairly cheaper.  $31.

But remember that you still need to connect the device to a SAS controller in order to get SAS ability for any of these devices.
