For me, I always make sure I have a dd (disk dump) image created from a bootable Linux DVD (Ubuntu is my preference).

I have been using it for twenty years, and it has never, not once, failed me.

I use other options for less critical backups (daily, weekly, monthly, whatever), but I always have a dd image tucked away as my ultimate 'get-out-of-jail-free' card.

I figure that as long as I can restore an image (any image) of the machine, then one of the more normal backups (Acronis is good) will be able to bring things up to date.

I've used ShadowProtect and Novastor successfully. Novastor can be a bit fiddly to set up and recovery CD creation is a pain, but once past these hurdles it works fine. It's also relatively cheap...

I have VMWare 6.0, Can I clone a image to the VMWare for physical server and  recovery purpose?

Hi,

I don't understand what you mean.

You can close the VM, but how is that related to the physical server?

You would want to create an image of the physical server, but you could try restoring it to a VM, or run a P2V option is usually better.
