Hi

i have installed sql 2014 with a named instance on a server which has also sql 2008 running there. i'm facing a timeout issue every second time when i try to login with a DSN (ODBC). saying "unable to complete the login process due to delay..."

Please advise.

Is there by any chance that you have both the instances using same TCP Port. if configured like that by mistake, this kind of issue can occur.
Kindly confirm whether
1. you have SQL Server Browser service enabled
2. Enough resources like CPU and RAM available on the server
3. What is the average CPU usage on the Server
4. Try to see whether any Anti virus scans are running on the server
5. Whether the SQL Server ports are configured properly via Windows Firewall.

Do you have the issue if you try to use sql authentication as well (username/password) or just when you're using a windows/integrated login? I've never seen your exact issue, but that would help you narrow it down to an issue with the instance or some kind of communication issue with your domain controller.

Also, when you try to log in and it fails, what's the delay between attempting to connect and a failure message? Is it the same if you try to use SSMS?

the issue was that for some reason it was conflicting the ports so i have set all the TCP port to a new port and it's now OK (sql browser was running before and the port was also open)

Yes, suspected conflicting ports as the issue was intermittent..
