Integrate external meeting requests/approvals in Exchange 2016

Hi,

I'm looking to integrate an external source of calendar items with our Exchange 2016 environment primarily so our managers can see the paid time off (PTO) approvals from our payroll company in an integrated way.  I thought it might be as easy as enabling external meeting messages on the shared calendar that's currently in use.  No go.  Apparently one can only enable external meeting messages on resource mailboxes.

Any ideas, thoughts or gotcha's on how to do this?
