deactivate office 365 install

I want to deactivate an office 365 installation.  The issue is that I'm not sure if the workstation still exists or not.  lol
Question is that if I deactivate it, could a user potentially loose work/data?  I was thinking if the workstation is still in use, the user will get a licensing error, I will reinstall or activate no harm no foul..

the data will remain intact. However, no licence means the user may not be able to modify the document ( eg word)
