Install VM from an OS in a folder on the Host
I need to install a hyperv VM. The OS has been copied to a folder on the host server. It is not an ISO image. I can't see how to install the OS on a VM using this folder.
you need some sort of boot iso. the folder where the files are must be shared you then in your boot.iso after it has booted go to a cmd prompt, connect to the share i;e. net use * \\server\share and run setup from there.

so the only way to do this is to create an ISO file from the folder?
Download the .ISO installation files from Microsoft's Evaluation Centre and key it up as needed with your license keys.

I created an ISO using https://sourceforge.net/projects/iso-creator-cs/?source=typ_redirect
No matter what I do, I cannot get the VM to boot from it. I have it mounted. I start the VM and it goes straight to boot failure
Under BIOS, Boot from CD is the first one listed
Under IDE controller the DVD drive shows up

The ISO image needs to be bootable with windows, you need the windows boot section.....
You were provided with suggestions on how to get a bootable ISO directly from Microsoft, or access you VLCS account and download it from there.
hyperv VM, merely means you want to install a VM on a hyper-v host.
look within the folder of the OS that you have whether it has a BOOTABLE media creation tool (USB/etc.) if it has, you would be able to use that to start the VM and then point to the source of the OS install. though the direct Path is to take the 10-20 minutes and download the install media for which you have a license from Microsoft as Philip on two occasions pointed out.

I found a USB DVD drive and inserted the Windows 2016 DVD. I was then able to install
