Hi,

Is there a way to mirror an Android to an Android via Wi-Fi  direct or other local connection?

Goal is to have 2 Android tablets for kids in car playing same movie.

Don t get what you are dating, just tried on.my network, Chromecasting between two devices is not working over wifi
What methods did you try which failed?
Chromecast.
Okay let me try again. What steps did you take to try running a Chromecast? Specific steps.
Install Chromecast, search for devices, what else is there to do?
Here is an example of steps:

Device A joins wifi network X
Device B joins wifi network X
Device B opens an app which lets it receive chromecasts, such as CastReceiver
From device A, open the (Google) "Home" app (AKA Chromecast).
At the top left, click on the hamburger menu
Select "Cast screen / audio"
Click on "Cast screen / audio"
From the "Cast to" menu, select device B.
what a disaster, tried it with one device, didn't work (no screen whatsoever), then I cannot remove it and add another device
Tried what? Removed what? Please be as specific as possible. It's difficult to help when we don't understand.
What is.there to.explain? Connection was there, but did not work. Then I cannot make a connection to another device.
Wifi connection? Chromecast connection? I still don't have enough details.

Assuming the wifi connection is being lost then there are a few things you can try like changing wifi channels or switching to a 5ghz network.

Assuming Chromecast "didn't work" means that you were unable to connect to the other device there are some options which you can try.
Assuming Chromecast "didn't work" means that you were unable to receive video there are some different fixes which you can try.
Assuming Chromecast "didn't work" means that you were unable to receive audio there are yet some other things which you can try.
Assuming Chromecast "didn't work" means that you got a specific error message then I would have more troubleshooting info if I knew what the error message was.

This is why we need specific details. I don't know what problem you're experiencing.
Thanks, but the mirroring is to much.of a hassle apparently. Maybe I better turn an old Samsung Galaxy S5 with an sd card into a media server (Pled or other) then connect to it via Wi-Fi direct ...?
That sounds like it would work but I've never tried. A media server would give more options than just screen mirroring. Every device connected could watch different things.
