adding exchange and gmail accounts to outlook 2016

we have a client that is currently using gmail for their email services. A single email address.

We have installed a new exchange 2016 server and outlook 2016.

The mail server is running just fine. ie we can send and receive email OK.

The problem we have is with outlook.

When we add the gmail email account to outlook, it works fine. When we try to add the exchange account it fails to add. If we then remove the gmail account, we can add the local exchange account just fine, but when we try to add the gmail account, that too fails.

we seem to be able to have one or the other, but not both.

can anyone advise why we are having problems with this, and what we need to do to get both working?

They will of course be migrating to the exchange account eventually, but currently everything is still running on the old gmail account, so for the short term at least we need access to both.

Any suggestions.

also you might need to turn off gmail sync app (if you are using) which runs in background where you install both profiles as app creates issues with exchange account
Once you turn off gmail sync app, you might be able to run both accounts in single profile, you need to test

ok that is useful, but unfortunately we need to be able to see both inboxes at the same time. having to switch to check if there is any mail waiting as not going to work for this client.

I don't understand why we cant add a gmail account when using exchange as the option is there to add it.

So very frustrating.

Thankyou for your help though.
turn off gmail sync app and check if both accounts can work within single profile. If not then no other option I see apart from above
many thanks. We have installed all new workstations and I have not installed a gmail sync ap, so I cant think that this can be the problem. unless the outlook wizard installs it during the add mailbox process.

seems really bizarre that you cant have an exchange mailbox and gmail account on the same profile when all of the options I have investigated seem to indicate it should be a pretty straight forward procedure. I have not come across one document that relates to problems working with exchange and gmail.

I am not for one minute doubting that you are right, it just seems stupid that we cant work with both mail types.

Many thanks.
This is because exchange and gmail messaging format are not same, they are different and somehow here outlook would getting issues

have you tested both accounts in single profile with gmail sync app disabled

I already faced this issue and sorted out the way I mentioned  by separating profiles
I have not installed a gmail sync app, these are all new machines and we have only ever used outlook to access mail on exchange and gmail? is the gmail sync app something that is activated at the gmail web account? If it is an app that runs on the local computer. I have not installed it.
Gmail sync app is mediator to use gmail effectively on outlook because outlook is not native email interface for gmail.

U may have not installed it, still if you facing issues with two accounts in same profile, only option is I suggested earlier
Even if you logged case with Microsoft, they will instruct the same thing for sure
not the answer i was hoping for, but we will just have to work with it.
many thanks to all
