Windows 10 update
Hi,
I am trying to do a windows 10 update on one of coworkers' laptop. He has an ASUS T100 2 in 1 laptop. C drive has only 8G and D drive has 500 G.
When doing the updates, it shows there is not enough space on C, external (D) is okay. I have deleted all the possible apps, files. I am still short for about 2G.
Is there a way to fix this? thanks

8 GB is not enough and no, no way to fix this. Consider at least having 64 GB for your OS. Depending on the programs that you plan to install in the future, even 64 GB might be too small in the long run.

I see.So, should I disable the win update service? and in your opinion, should he not use this laptop anymore? thanks
On individual machines, you cannot permanently disable Windows 10 updates.
New drive or new computer, one or the other.

thank you
Wow... EE "ate" my latest response after hitting submit.
It was: "Maybe I misunderstood and you are saying that 8GBs are free on c: - in that case, doing an in-place upgrade to the latest win10 build would be possible by suing another partition with more space for temporary files. Setup would even offer this on its own!"

8GB is the total space for C drive.
Ah... so I did not misunderstand.
Say, who partitioned it that way, the manufacturer!?

That is a 2in 1 design. The keyboard and the "screen" can be detached. So, the "screen" part becomes a tablet and the keyboard part has a 500G B hdd. The "screen" has 8GB on its own.
Hm, horrible idea, if you ask me.
ASKER
I guess it was a "good" design back then with win 7.... lol
O-K... I thought you would update "win10 old built"->"win10 newest built", but you try to go from 7->10. No, that cannot work out.
ASKER
wait.....I am sorry if I did not clarify my question. The laptop was built originally with Win7. It was later upgraded to Win 10. I need to upgrade from "old win 10" to "new win 10"
sorry
sorry
Did you try it? Starting setup should bring up a dialogue that offers to use a different partition for temporary files and it should work.

My coworker is not here now. So, I can only let you know based on what I remember.
It will show a screen with C Drive and D (External) Drive. When clicks on D drive (Free more space), a green check mark will display. When clicking on C drive (free more space), a red X will display saying 1.XX GB space is needed. It also displays a screen that I can uninstall apps or delete some files. I have tried to uninstall and deleted all the unnecessary files. But I still need more space. thanks

1.xx GB, hmm.
If you could share a treesize report with us so I can recommend what to (temporarily) move.

okay, I will post back. (sorry, the q is closed. Should I request to reopen?)
If you feel like it. Judging what to move is easy.

I also made a mistake that c drive was more than 8 GB. sorry
How much space does C: have? Because you do not have that many apps.
ASKER
About 28gb. Sorry , I took a pic to show you. Faster that way. Thanks

OK thank you. That is still not enough for Windows. So you need a third party tool to expand C: and reduce D:
ASKER
I do not think it would be possible since C is a SSD and D is HDD, right? thanks
Sorry on my part. No. You need a bigger SSD drive. So at this point, make sure the machine is worth it.
ASKER
"make sure the machine is worth it." lol
thanks

If anything else doesn't work try using http://foldersize.sourceforge.net to check and see whats taking up the room. Maybe manually deleting unused things. But with a drive that small you might still have to install the updates with a usb temp drive.

After talking to my coworker, he still has access to the office copy (that is his own copy). So we uninstalled the office. When everything was done, we just reinstalled it back.
