Computer hangs after recent update: Setting up personalized settings for Windows Desktop update.
Running Windows 7 Pro on a z210 HP computer.
After the most recent Microsoft update, (yesterday) when I log into any account, the computer hangs with the message:
"Setting up personalized settings for Windows Desktop update."
How do I solve this problem?
Who else is experiencing this problem?

after a couple of hours - i would reboot the pc - that often helps
If any of this wont help, restore to previus build and update again.

The recently applied patches were KB4340556, KB2952664, KB338818 and KB890630. Has no one else has reported the problem I experienced with these patches? I have 5 Windows 7 machines and all of them had the same problem.
Rebooting helped on 2 of the machines. Logging into an administrator account helped one machine. The rest are STILL SITTING at the prompt I described and have been for over FOURTEEN HOURS. Would you honestly wait 14 hours for a solution? I think not.
Who else has an answer or where can I find more information?

No, I would not wait fourteen hours, this process should complete within 15 to 30 minutes.
The personalization notice is following a user login. ctrl-alt-del to envoke explorer?

No, I have 5 Windows 7 computers in a peer-to-peer network. The computers will boot and show the login icons. I click on a log in icon and enter the password. Then, in a few seconds, the small screen appears which displays the message Setting up personalized settings for: Windows Desktop Update. That’s as far as the login procedure will go . The z210 has now been sitting for well over 14 hours displaying this message. I am not sure what to do now. I have a backup so I can restore to that. But when patches are applied again the same problem will occur.
Since I know the numbers of the 4 recent patches, I guess I could hide these and apply one at a time and manually create a restore point before applying each one.
What do you suggest I do?

can you boot in safe mode? then try running sfc

Thank you for the suggestion, I always forget about sfc. I'll run this as soon as possible.

I am actively working on this problem. I have been out of town for a while. Now I will try the idea posed by nobus
Hello nobus: I have tried using sfc and the process found nothing wrong. So I'm wondering what to do now? May be hide the updates causing the problem??? Any suggestions?

Did you reboot after SFC ? if still bad, try a system restore then
ASKER
Yes, system restore will restore the computer, then the same patches will reappear after a few days so I have to keep executing system restore so I can use the computer. How can these patches be hidden or ignored so the computer can process other patches? Otherwise this computer will never be able to process future patches.
run the check update manually then review the updates, and decline the ones you think impacts ....
The issue is that you allow the system to apply them automatically.

I will manually execute Windows update and select one of the updates and let it complete. Then reboot and log in to see if it causes the problem. If it does I guess I must hide it somehow.
So the question is how to hide an update?

it may help if you uninstall first the last 2-3 updates
then let it update again
then let it update again

Thanks to nobus and arnold for your prompt help.
Some things take longer, the option I would recommend to let the process complete.
Unfortunately you in this case can not provide which updates were applied, but when you do, the situation for which this question is posed will no longer need an answer.
