SQL Instance and Production Database.
Hi Expert,
I have question for MS SQL Server 2012 Experts DBA’s or Developers. I have been tasked recently to Created new SQL Instance on production Server and import or Copy the Existing SQL Data bases to new instance. The Scenario is, we have very critical Application e.g. “CRITICAL”, Application Server 2012 and MS SQL Server 2012 Instance for this application running in production environment. The project initiated by relevant department to upgrade the Application. With latest versions involving Application vendor and as requirement. I have built the new Application Server which done but there is requirement to create new SQL instance as well so they can test and UAT purpose before bring this into production.
There is no problem to Create new SQL Server instance and backup all the existing Data base on production Server.
Question: how I have copy or import existing Data base from existing instance with all structure in New SQL server Instance, and what will be impact copying production database on new instance. Is this will not break the conflict with existing database and cause an issue with application?
Regards

By restoring your production backup on the TEST and UAT instances.

Hi STe5an,
you mean if I create new instance of pronunciation SQL Server and backup the existing Database and then restore the database on newly created instance, is this will not cause any problem or conflict. I am not in position to install any test SQL server due to licenceing restriction.
So this upgrade will go on same production server as new SQL instance.
Please advice ?

As far as I understand you, your task is to setup two new SQL Server instances (TEST and UAT)?
You can of course test this. Cause during setup of your TEST and/or UAT server, you make snapshots of the OS. Then you install your SQL Server instances and restore the PRODUCTION backup on this server.
Your nomenclature is irritating. What "upgrade"?
You need, of course, a different server than PRODUCTION for TEST/UAT. Cause otherwise you're risking to interfere with PRODUCTION (data loss as worst case and for sure resources like memory, CPU and IO bandwidth).

Hi,
I am not after for two new instance Test or UAT, it s only one new instance but as you said restoring the production database on new instance may cause problem. I am not in position to build separate server as well. I am going to think work around and will update case if needs further assistance.

It is absolutely not advisable to run a TEST/UAT on the PRODUCTION host in parallel. Especially, when there are CRITICAL instances/applications involved,
Things during test can go wrong leading to DoS of your PRODUCTION instance. But further more, when having two instances on the same host, the need share resources. This leads to either performance degradation of PRODUCTION, due lesser memory, CPU and IO bandwidth or you need to restrict your TEST/UAT instance, so that the test results are no longer representative.

NAS? I hope you only store your backup files on it. The typical NAS is not designed for such a load.
