SoftwareDistribution Folder - Need more space in the server

Ihave windows 2008 r2 server. The C drive is getting full and i need to create space for any future installations etc. I noticed there is a folder known as "software distribution" and in that there is a folder known as "DOWNLOADS" in C\WINDOWS\SOFTWAREDISTRIBUTION\DOWNLOADS.

This folder is about 20 Gb. Can i delete the contents in this folder? if yes... how to proceed with cleaning this folder.. any steps to be taken? i am worried that i might delete something important from this folder...

other than the above any other ideas as how to free up space on server 2008 r2.

read the above article.

i just want to delete the contents in the download folder (its in software distribution folder) and not delete all the folders in software distribution.

so the best way is to stop automatic update service ---> delete the contents in download folder ---> restart the windows update service.

am i right?
Yes, this is correct.

Please note, your system will try to download content necessary upon next update check, if it's still needed to install.

Hope this helps.

Christopher.
You can safely delete anything in the Download folder that is 30 days old or older. But not much space is being used here anyway.

So you need more disk space or given it is Server 2008, replace with a newer Server and much more disk space.
You shouldn't delete files from there because files older than 30 days does not mean that the update is installed yet.

You can junction that folder to another drive with space
If updates have been run as they should have been you can delete old files. If updates have been neglected then you may wish to keep these files

Either way the server is short on  space
