Exchange 2010 server stops accepting mail
Hi all. I'm having issues with a customers Exchange 2010 server (14.02.0390.003), running on Windows Server 2008R2
The symptom, it stops accepting email. At this point I can't telnet to it locally like this 127.0.0.1 25
The MS Exchange transport service cannot be started or stopped easily.
I have managed to rename the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\TransportRoles\ data\Queue
but had to do this by disabling all the Exchange services, restarting the server, renaming the folder, then enabling, and starting all the services again.
This worked for the whole day yesterday but stopped accepting mail again last night.
The other problem is I can't stop the EdgeTransport.exe process to rename the Queue folder again.
I have tried taskill /f /pid 9968 but it says
ERROR: The process with PID 9968 could not be terminated.
Reason: There is no running instance of the task.
If I try to rename the file mail.que it says "cant be completed because the file is open in edgetransport.exe"
Now I'm stuck, can anyone please help?
thanks

Hi Ivan.
Thanks for your quick replies...
YES, the update KB4338818 was installed on 12/07/2018 - which is exactly when the problems started.
I have uninstalled the update and the server will be restarted at lunch time to complete the removal.
I managed to recreate the mail.que a couple if times, only after restarting the server, as I couldn't stop the edgetransport.exe
I did run command as administrator, and used process explorer, but both said the process didn't exist, strangely.
(But it only lasted 5-6 hours as reported by others after seeing your link )
I will reboot and let you know how it goes.
Thanks for your help so far :0)

This is a known issue without any solid solution for now. Please try to uninstall the KBs as mentioned here.

if you want to create a new mail.queue file then you would need to:
1) Stop the microsoft exchange transport service
2)Rename the queue folder which will be located in the following path
Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\TransportRoles\
3)Rename it to queue.old and then start the microsoft exchange transport service .This will create a new mail.queue which will be in normal size.

Ivan.
