PNG thumbnails not showed by Picasa viewer in File Explorer in Win 10
I had this question after viewing Windows 7 - png thumbnails display as generic image in File Explorer.
Please help, I have the similar problem. But I have never used FastPictureViewer and is running Windows 10 64bit Pro OS build 17134.165
Reading the replies, I'm pretty sure it must have to do with a Windows update?
Since it seems that this latest win updates did run 02-05-2018, I've looked to programs and think that it is strange that a lot of programs, drivers etc. are reported as "installed On" this date, although they are installed up to several years before. see attached.
I reinstalled the Picasa Viewer (whole application, the last version Google maded 3.9.141.259) - but it did not help.
So, I guess that uninstalled one or more of the programs "installed" on maj 2. this year will help? But which one - a graphic one perhaps?? I really think it must be a Windows 10 update issue.
Please help, anyone, I have no clue when the error came, but it was in june since I discovered it in start of july - and reinstalled Picasa 4. july, BTW.

Thanks for your reply, Davis McCarn. I configured the Picasa photoviewer as described in your link, (and restarted) , it was however already enabled, and it didn't help. And since it works on other machines I use, and has appeared after a Windows update as I described, I think it's a Windows 10 issue/registry or something with other graphical programs or drivers after this update.
Yes, I know Picasa was abandoned and replaced by Google photo. Unfortunately, their "local" windows photo wiever was not continued. I have, however, used the latest version of Picasa photo viewer and it works as usual.
The problem is, however, that .png types are not shown in File Explorer Win 10 as thumbnails.

PNG files not displaying in Explorer is really a different problem than their not working in Picasa; but, since they may be related, here is a thread on how to rebuild the thumbnail cache:

Picasa was written in C++ and several of the recent updates have been targeting security holes in C++ so we may be stuck with Picasa's behavior.

Thanks for the tip from the windows forums, Davis McCarn. Unfortunately, it didn't help. Eventhough I tried it several times, and restarted computer.
So Windows Explorer won't display thumbnails of PNG files either?
And, what version of Windows 10 is it? (Do WinKey+R and type WINVER<enter> in the run box)

Yes, It's all about Windows explorer can not view content in them, but as icons. I think it's happened after a window 10 update, so it is now Windows 10 64bit Pro OS build 17134.165 - Please refer to my original question above, and the attached screenshot file
If JPG files are displaying as thumbnails and it is only PNG's which have a problem, something has happened to the Windows rendering engine and how it handles PNG files.
Check these two settings just to be safe:

If they are good, you may want to uninstall Picasa and Google Photos then check that the default file settings for both JPG and PNG files match each other.

I have already tried to uninstall Picasa and install it again without success. But I can and will try it again.
I guess that Google Photos can not be uninstalled since it's not a Windows program or an app? But a "service" inside the google chrome browser? Maybe I should try to uninstall Chrome browser. I use both Chrome 67.0.3396.99 and Waterfox 56.2.2 (64bit Firefox)

I was trying to fix the Explorer issue so we could move on to Picasa.

I'm not sure what you mean, Davis McCarn. Do you think the problem is Explorer or is it Picasa/Google Photos?

Thanks, Davis McCarn, your comment was helpful in that sense that I also think it's due to Windows rendering of PNG files. When I uninstalled Picasa, I set the default PNG viewer and JPG viewer to 3 different, one at a time: IrfanView, FileViewer Plus, and Windows Photo Viewer. In all three situations, JPG's was showed content in thumbnails, and content in preview pane. But PNGs was still not showing the content, but instead a picture according to the program/app. (E.g. Flowers for Windows Photo Viewer) - and no picture in preview pane.
I now think it could be a PNG setting in registry, that is corrupt/read-only, overriding another setting or so, and not anything to do with Picasa?

Read this article then download and merge the default settings file for PNG files from method 2. You will need admin privileges to merge it:
