Gateway data sets

I have just started to deploy and learn Microsoft Power Bi. I installed the BI gateway and able to get it connected in the portal.  My question is, how to i make a BI workspace that calls to that data?  DO i need the BI desktop app or can i not create that from the portal?

I wear a lot of hats...

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hi Leigh,

When you say Portal, do you meant to say OnPremise Power BI Report Server or something else?

One of the easiest way to get started with Power BI is to use Power BI Desktop though.

Chinmay.

I am referring to the Web Portal by Microsoft.  I already know how to use the desktop app.  We are trying to do real time queries to SQL servers.

Hi Leigh,

When you say Web Portal - it still can be from Power BI which is a cloud based service and Power BI Report Server - which is installed on premise and configured - both provide similar features (up to an extent and have distinct differences which are unique to each product)

If you are using Power BI Report Server, you can refer to: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/report-server/quickstart-create-powerbi-report so the tool you will need is Microsoft Power BI Desktop Optimized for Power BI Report Server.

If you are using Power BI then you can use Microsoft Power BI Desktop to start creating reports.
