Microsoft Exchange Writer keeps disappearing on Exchange 2013 server
Hi,
We have exchange 2013 running on windows 2012 r2 64 server. We use veritas back exec 20.1 to back up the mail box, every since we moved to back up exec 20.1 from backup exec 2014, the exchange server back up failed. We found the reason was the Microsoft exchange writer on the exchange 2013 was not present when we checked vssadmin list writers.
If we restart the exchange 2013 server, the Microsoft exchange writer comes back and back up happens with no issue. Then after few days the Microsoft exchange writer would disappear and the back up would fail.
Some suggested the fix to this is to check the following registry key
1) HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControl Set\Servic es\MSExcha ngeIS\Para metersSyst em\Disable Exchange Writer should exist and be set to 0.
2) "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\E xchangeSer ver\v15\Re play\Param eters\Enab leVSSWrite r" and was set to 0 to disable the writer. Setting this to 1, and restarting the "Microsoft Exchange Replication" service will bring back the Microsoft Exchange VSS Writer.
I did both the registry key and still the MS Exchange Writer would only come if I restarted the server and then will disappear in few days after I restart server.
I'm not sure how to keep the Microsoft Exchange VSS Writer after the restart without it disappearing.
I will appreciate any help.
Thanks

have seen this happening with me in Exchange 2010 environment, I used to restart the Information restore and replication service that used to bring back the writer, but as in your case the issue will pop up again and it was frustrated.
then I looked into the Shadow space alocation for the db, on the db drive property and set that the shadow for all the db where the backup were failing to one of our restore drive where we had plenty of free space after that the issue allmost went away. i suspact that as my dBs were full all most 75 % probably the shadow cache for backup might be causing this writers to dissappare...

Hi Sunil,
Sorry, I'm not able to follow what you mean by
"then I looked into the Shadow space alocation for the db, on the db drive property and set that the shadow for all the db where the backup were failing to one of our restore drive where we had plenty of free space after that the issue allmost went away"
I back up to a tape drive, so what is that you want me to check?
You mean I have to check something on the drive that has the mail database ? Please advise.
Thanks

before your db is backed up a snapshot/shadow is captured of it, which is mostly stored at the same place as DB, so you can review it from the database drive/mount point property from the disk manager.
