VM reboots on kernel panic but hangs while rebooting

I have an RHEL5 VM that reboots on kernel panics. The VM hangs while rebooting at different stages of the bootup process.
I noticed the console shows the cursor blinking but stays stuck booting up and does not progress.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot? The blinking cursor indicates the system is hung, correct?

If you're running the VM then view the VM (guest) logs from the host perspective.

In other words, you can cd directly to the VM as a set of files, then look through /bin/ls -rt /var/log files + see if you come with an answer.

Likely there are also per-container startup logs. I use LXD + tend to review per-container logs or per-VM logs on a regular basis to debug problems.

Use the logs Luke.

Thank you. I am trying to figure out why it hangs on reboot, not what caused the reboot.
Sounds to me like it is stuck trying to get into graphics mode. I would try emulating a different video card (Cyrrus  has usually worked for me)

Thank you, I will try that; why do you suspect it is stuck on the graphics card?
Because you aren't getting into graphics mode. The system hasn't crashed or the cursor wouldn't flash. Graphics card problems are just really common. Of course it could be something else...
