UPS devices

I have a power distribution rackmount device connected to the servers. This might be stupid question but if I purchase a UPS. Can I run one power cable from the power distribution device to the UPS and it will be intelligent enough to power down all the devices in case of a power outage or do I need to directly connect each device into the  UPS.

You either need to connect each server, or, when the first server starts an orderly shutdown, you need it (batch file) to shut down the others.

No, the UPS normally have a software client you install on each machine you want to shutdown.

First, there are two ways a machine can communicate with the UPS.  They can communicate by networking or by using direct cable connection.

What you are describing sounds like your UPS will be communicating with the machines via network because I don't imagine the UPS being connected to each server/machine using direct cable.  In this case, you will need to install a UPS client software that can communicate with each machine.  APC uses the PowerChute Network Shutdown to turn off a machine when the UPS goes below a set threshold.

You should check with your UPS vendor to see if they have a network client you can use.  What kind of UPS is it?
