HEIC to JPG Conversation

I have an iPhone 8 with the latest iOS update. I was surprised that the photos are in .heic format when connected it to my Windows 7 laptop. i have no clue what is. Can't open the file and was told I should convert them to JPG. is this correct?

Apple has a JPEG converter built into iOS 11 photo transferring as well. If you go to Settings and then Photos, make sure the “Transfer to Mac or PC” option is set to Automatic. This should make your iPhone photos transfer to your computer in a compatible format (e.g. JPEG).
Until this becomes an established image standard you can get a free conversion tool for Windows OS here
https://imazing.com/heic
This one nicely retains all your EXIF metadata about the location and camera settings and puts them into the jpeg conversion
Hi Well Kyre,

Aconvert.com, HEICtoJPG.com are some of the sites which can help you to do this.

Thanks
For more reading on HEIC see this article - https://fileinfo.com/extension/heic

If you do not want iOS to save images in the HEIC/HEIF format, open your "Settings" app, and select Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. Selecting "Most Compatible" means that iOS will now save images in the JPEG format.
If you have many images to convert, you might prefer using ImageMagick, so you can do 100s-1000s+ conversions.

ImageMagick runs pretty much everywhere + likely this will be easiest on a Linux Distro like Ubuntu Bionic, as you'll likely require building ImageMagick from source to include HEIC support.

You do this by first installing libde265-devel + then doing an ImageMagick build. Latest ImageMagick is... HEIC aware... If the correct HEIC libraries + header files can be found, then ImageMagick will automagically build HEIC support.
