Opinion on Wireless Cams System optimal setup

We would like to know EE opinion on wireless cams system.  We have been presented with Lorex wire free 4 cams system.  We know nothing 100% secure and everything is hackable, yet we would like you opinion how secure is this type cams really are.  And maybe any specific brand you guys have worked with.

Hi rayluvs,

Security cameras especially the lower-end brands are basically IOT devices that are easily hack-able. Lorex is very low-end in terms of performance and security. Wired is always better, more stable and more secure than wired systems especially for those who are still simply deploying wireless using WPA/2/PSK (Pre-Shared Key). Most deployments of PSK don't have a well-thought out architecture nor defenses to thwart drive-by hacks so an adversary can sit hundreds, thousands and even miles away continually attempting to attack with no countermeasures. On top of that the PSKs are rarely if ever rotated.

On the mid-level I'd look at Dahua or Hikvision (both ~$100-150 per camera) and on the commercial end I'd go with Axis (~$150-1200 per camera) 4P cameras that are solid in both performance and security. All of them have a good ability to process the encoding required on the NVRs to view them on 4K TVs monitors. Lorex and the like do not and therefore even if you have 4 or 5P cameras if you were to view them on 2K or 4K TVs/monitors the resolution looks like junk - but if viewed on your smartphone will look decent. It has to do with the encoding efficiencies and the geometry of the viewing space of your monitors. So pretty much everything will look OK/good on a smartphone but that is not the real story. Test on larger screens like what you'd typically setup in a sec room and you'll see a tremendous difference. Also the range and night vision are far better as well. Even with the ones I've recommended I'd definitely put them in a isolated network segment.

Let me know if you have any questions!

The one you recommend; Dahua, Hikvision and Axis, are they also wireless? If so, what's the difference between Lorex, security or hacking wise?

Also does any of these including Lorex offer any cloud service? That is that while recording sent it to the cloud?

If any of the above has cloud, is the connection secured?

Also, it saved in cloud encrypted?

(seems as if we don't know much, and its true, so thank you very much)
Yes all have wireless options but again I'd recommend PoE over wireless any day of the week for the reasons I mentioned previously.

I believe that all three have cloud options.

If any of the above has cloud, is the connection secured?
Should be, but I suggest checking with each company.

Should be, but I suggest checking with each company.

Ignoring the topic of security of wireless, it's a lot easier to thwart a wireless camera. Battery theft, signal jamming... or even lucking out and getting by while the battery is dead.

Long story short, if I were investing in a security system, I would go wired all the way.
