RAID6, adding more hard drives -- Dell PERC H730P Mini ?

Everything I read acts like I can add 2 extra drives to my below server, then use Dell OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) Software "RECONFIGURE" to add these drives to my existing 1 array after I do a FULL backup.

  1. Is that correct ?
  2. Anything else I should be aware of ?
  3. Is it true that if I was running RAID10 instead of RAID6 I would need to delete the array and rebuild from backup instead ?

1. Yes, that is correct.
2. You cannot do this if you have more than one array across the same set of disks. And beware if some OS requirements if by adding the space you exceed 2TB.
3. Yes, also true ... RAID 10 is a "nested" RAID level and has some limitations.
Mind you I don't use nor have immediate access to a PERC controller. With that said, PERC controllers have historically not supported dynamically expanding and rebalancing RAID5/6. Such a change usually requires a destructive act. Looking at the 730 documentation, I don't see that as a touted feature. So no, I would not count on being able to do this.
Refer to my post. This has always been doable on PERC controllers (where there is not multiple VD's across disks), from even the PERC 2 on up to current models.

Thanks Andy! Good to know they finally have the ability to expand RAID 10 ... Just like the list at the end, their documentation doesn't show it either (at least around the time of release, and maybe they added it to a subsequent firmware update, although that video has been around for a while - probably just didn't update the documentation, which would be par for the course). It would be interesting to see if you can migrate to/from a RAID 10 from/to another level now, which also historically could not be done.

Updated user guide Rev. A06 Dec 2016 lists RAID 10 to RAID 10 migration (expansion) but doesn't list RAID 10 to or from RAID 5 and 6 so I think not.

Odd that they can go from RAID 0 to RAID 5 but not from RAID 10 to RAID 5 since you could strip half the disks out of a RAID 10 array, re-tag it as RAID 0 then migrate; not that I'd be mad enough to try that.
