Was that user the one who created the meeting in the first place?  If not, the person who created it would have to delete it or uninvite the user.

If the user's calendar event, and they can't delete it, maybe they can change the end date so that it stops going into the future:

I don't know Outlook 365's interface, but this or something like this might work, adapted for the interface you have in 365:

  • Double-click any meeting in the series. If it asks if you are changing the instance or entire series, select the entire meeting series option. (365 may not ask that actually)
  • Click Recurrence.
  • Find Range of recurrence or frequency (not sure which), and then change the end date to something prior to the next meeting in the series.
  • If there are others invited, add a message to let others know future meetings are cancelled.
  • Click Save & Close  or Send Update if prompted.

No other answers. This was the most likely cause.
