"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

There are two classes of keylogger out there:

1. Software. Software keyloggers are generally detected by Defender or whatever other antimalware program you have in place. Also, if user are set up properly and don't run with admin rights, keyloggers generally cannot install themselves.

2. Hardware. Cannot be detected in software. Hardware keyloggers consist of a small object that is either installed into a keyboard, or plugged inline with the cable. These devices are readily available online. http://www.keelog.com/hardware-keylogger/

Another thing you should be checking if you are worried about someone intercepting keystrokes is poorly engineered wireless mice and keyboards. Most of these devices feature encryption, however many use flawed algorithms, that can be circumvented. I would not recommend using wireless keyboards or mice without a proper encryption layer. Microsoft do several with AES encryption.

Side note:  Expanding on what Mal has said above, I do not recommend using wireless mice, keyboards or headsets at all.  Every method of encryption has eventually been broken.  Aside from that, anything using Bluetooth as a wireless transport is just begging for trouble.  After 25 years, 5 versions and 10 releases it is still bug-ridden and a preferred vector for infecting anything that uses it.
