Skype for business account deletion from directory

How can i remove or deactivate an ex-employees email account from skype for business directory? I do not want the email address to be searchable since they no longer work for the organization. What is the best solution to permanently remove the account from being accessible.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

(Assumes you deleted the terminated employee user account)
It should go away after 30 days of being deleted.

They kinda ghost for 30 days in case it was an accidental deletion.

There is a way to force it if you need it done faster, but ... not off the top of my head.

What if the ex-employees account has not been deleted, but will be kept active for a few months. How can we hide the account from being searchable or accessed internally and externally?

There is a checkmark in Exchange Online.

It says hide from global address book.

I believe this is what you want.

To be a little more specific in the Exchange Online Admin center.  Find the mailbox of the receipient.  Click edit.  Then look around for the checkmark that says hide from global address list.

oh Hey I just looked.  It can be found on the user mail settings from the normal admin page.  Just click to edit the show in global address book and change from yes to no.

From active users select the user in question>

they will have mail settings open that up and you'll see the global address book setting.  Toggle to no.

csuser commands did not delete account from active directory, they simply disable it for SFB

also if you want to hide email from GAL, you need to hide it from GAL through EXchange online admin center / powershell

oh if the terminated employee isn't coming back and you are just trying to keep their email you can just convert the box to a shared email box and then delete their account.  or at least remove the license so you can use it for others/ not pay for it.

i have removed the license but the account is still viewable in skype directory. I simply want to hide it from the skype directory.

Did you already try hiding it from the global address list?

These products are all pretty closely tied.  It wouldn't surprise me to see hiding it from the global address book, make it disappear from the skype directory as well.

Try the suggestions from the link

So it appears this is not possible via GUI.

It requires some careful Powershell vudu.

Confirmed after manually setting  the 'mailNickname' attribute and doing "start-adsyncsynccylce -Policytype Initial" the mailboxes were hidden from the GAL across the board.

So Skype is part of the GAL but only with using powershell can you get them hidden.  I'd open a support ticket and make your rep do it for you.
