Recover Files from D:

Hi Experts,

I have Win 7 Pro, and noticed if I delete something from a drive other than C:\, I never get "Are you sure...?" - is there a setting?

As well, and I think I know the answer, but if there a way to recover those files without third party utilities.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Is the other drive a network drive?  Even with network drives, I get prompted but the network deletions to not go into the recycle bin.

For network drives you need a solid back up system

Take a look at Recuva for restoring some files you have deleted.

A good route to go with Network drives is to turn on previous versions or VSS shadow copies.

Then if you accidentally delete something you just go ahead and create a text file and rename it to the same name as the file that was deleted(you will need to turn on show file extensions and know the extension of the file that was deleted.) and click on properties and then previous versions and restore the most recent shadow copy.

Of course as John mentioned you should be doing full backups as well.  But I find the previous versions keep the end users from contacting me over minor issues :)
