"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I normally approach this by converting the PDF files to text + then using command line tools for searching.

The following works very well for PDF files...

pdftotext -enc ASCII7 -nopgbrk -layout '$in.pdf' > in.txt

To convert PDF + DOC files (and many other formats), you can also use...

libreoffice --headless options files

which provides a single tool for all your conversions.

Make sure in Indexing options that you have selected Content in the file search options.
Then Windows Search should find what you are looking for.

Agent Ransack

https://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack/

AND and OR is available with the freeware version. Parentheses can be used as well.

"Peanut Butter" AND (Jelly OR Chocolate) AND Bread

Just make sure to disable Regular Expressions when searching with AND/OR.

The 'Pro' version of Agent Ransack is called FileLocator Pro (not freeware) and extends the already awesome search capability with indexing, advanced RegEx, etc.
