1. The volume when listening to music seems low volume compared to my desktop and VLC.
The on keyboard volume adjustment says max. Any internal settings? or can external speakers be used?
2. I get a message asking me to turn on windows. I used it for over an hour and saw nothing that indicated that windows was not on = ?
3. Is it best to always use the power cord when it is available and only use the battery when there is no place to use a power cord?

1. It has Realtec Audio. Try upgrading the driver.  But the sound on these devices is not room quality loud. I have a ThinkPad X1 Carbon.

2. Please make a screen shot and post here. We do not see such a message on our client T machines.

3. I make sure my machine is charged at night before turning it off. I then use it the next day until the battery is low and then I connect it. With SSD, you can go 4 to 6 hours before needing to plug in. I did not just leave it plugged in all the time.

consider the size of the speakers and the amount of energy the cone windings can handle. if you want more volume use externally powered speakers. Every watt of energy going to audio means less available for the rest of the system. Laptops are a portable All in one with portability being the biggest design factor.

Just plug the external speakers into the headphone jack. most laptops don't have a line-out jack.
3. I think my HD is HHD.
So using it with a fully charged battery (even though there is a power source) until it runs down say 80% and then plug in the power is the best way? Use power as little as possible.........

I have an X230 with HDD and it is good for about 2.5 to 3 hours. I like using a battery from full to low and plugging it in to keep it in reasonable shape.
Here is the Windows message and earlier during a one hour use it hovered barely visible on the right side, like a half way prompt. I have only used the laptop 3-4 times and new to Windows 10 so I did not go to settings like it shows.

then activate windows.  Did this machine come with windows 10 home? If not which OS was on the machine when new?
This is it and it works fine as it is. I don't know what changes will be made when activated.

Does your Lenovo have an OEM Windows key on the bottom of the laptop. That is normally where you will find the key to activate your Windows OS from manufacture lime Lenovo, HP, Dell.

Volume levels is driven by the size and power behind the speaker as others stated.
