"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Trick #1: Subscribe to your largest local security company for one month.

This will give you the Protected by Foo sign for your yard.

Then opt out on 2nd month. I've never seen a security company who sent round people to pick up their signs.

Leave the sign in your front yard.

Trick #2: Purchase random timers + connect to various lights in your house, which kick on various times.

Trick #3: If your house is empty a lot, buy a beater (cheap car), which runs + then just move the car every day.

Trick #4: If your house is going to be empty for days or weeks, hire a neighborhood kid to move your car every day you're away.

Home alarm systems with window sensors and so on. Whether you go the managed or DIY approach is up to you. However, David's post is a pretty good set of deterrents which would be a way to actually avoid the need to purchase any equipment. Most thieves would avoid a place with an alarm sign outside. But also, his last two suggestions can also mess up how one scopes a place, especially if it's random times that the car gets moved.

Also get a sign for the backyard .. many burglars don't see the sign in the front yard. (tips from a burglar)
A dog chain and water bowl is another deterrent. Burglars don't like dogs.

Personal security, or home security?  They are not the same thing.  For home security, well-concealed cameras that do not depend on AC line power which report to a concealed computer with a UPS.

For personal security:

A home defense shotgun, though if you're competent with it nothing beats the warm, comforting feel of an M1911A1.

Don't forget to get a dog to use the dog dishes.

Then go to your local gun store and get signs like the one below.
