hex colors in illustrator

adobe illustrator hex colors are not lining up with pantone swatches. which do you go with? is the pantone swatch the law or illustrator generated hex code? why don't they match? able to make them match?

When you say they're not lining up, what exactly do you mean? If you are viewing the color on your display then you need a calibrated display to see the color accurately. The same is true for a printer. Color devices must be calibrated in order to reproduce color faithfully.

Sorry, when I select a pantone swatch in Illustrator, the hex code it generates is not consistent with the official pantone hex codes. it's very close but not the same

Check your color gamut settings. Illustrator might be shifting an out-of-gamut color into a printable color.
