removing the KNOWN password from a PDF that has a password on it only to open it.

Accountant sends us tax returns as password protected PDFs (password needed to open it.  Properties says it was created with Thomson Reuters FileCabinet CS.  The security tab says I can print, copy contents, comment, etc (I can do everything execpt doc assembly and page extraction, whatever those are : )

I click on them in outlook, it opens in Acrobat Reader DC ( free version) - this is on a windows 10 pro machine by the way.

I want to keep a PDF without the password.  So print to PDF?  But they get sooo much larger

Working on it now, he sent a 24 page PDF that is 93kb

trying different apps:

microsoft print to PDF - 673kb
Tried printing with PDF Creator, but it balks because PDF is password protected (to open, and printing is allowed).  WTF!

Tried opening in chrome.  printing w/ microsoft print to pdf made it a 5MB file!  And still can't use pdf creator.

What's a good combination for opening & printing a PDF or some other easy way to strip off password protection to open a PDF

Hi Mike,
I did this five-minute EE video Micro Tutorial to show how to password protect a PDF with free software, but it may also be used to un-protect a PDF that is password protected...assuming, of course, that you have the password...which you do:

How to password-protect a PDF with free software

Change the Security Method drop-down to No Security and do a Save or Save As. The file size should stay about the same, Regards, Joe

If you have a password protected tax returns PDF document and you want to remove password from it permanently I would suggest you to use professional software i.e. SysTools PDF Unlocker Tool. With this tool, you can remove password as well as restrictions from PDF document.  Once, you remove the security password by this tool, the resultant PDF file will not ask for document open password. Moreover, as you said in the Security tab you are only allowed to copy, print, comment PDF  but, by using this PDF Unlocker software you can remove all restrictions present in the PDF file. After unlocking the PDF document file can be easily copied, print, edit, sign, extract & commented without any hassle.

Thanks guys!  Seems (at least to me) the simplest way was to print to a new PDF.  So another question I hinted at here, but officially here : )

(I just posted it and as a basic member of EE, it says it takes 2 hours till it's live.  I seem to be able to view the URL when not logged in, not sure if you have to wait 2 hours to reply?)
