FM - Any problems with FM 17?

Has anyone found any major problems with Filemaker 17?  We currently have FM 16 and are completely dissatisfied it.  Instead of the usual 3-4 seconds, it takes anywhere from 8-15 seconds to open AND sometimes it doesn't open at all.  Worked with FM tech support for a year and tried all the solutions in EE, but couldn't figure it out.  Seems that FM 16 doesn't always close out all the way because a reboot seems to solve the problem of not opening up, though not the delay problem.  Appreciate any advice on FM 17.  Thank you.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hey Randy, I haven't not experienced any issues with FM 17 but let me ask you a question about what's happening with 16 because it sounds like something I've encountered.

When you go to open a Hosted file and click on the Server on the left in the Hosts dialog, do you get a "Waiting for response..." message in the hosted files area on the right? The message sits there for anywhere from 10-30 seconds before the files appear. Then when you open the files they open (and laster close) very slowly.

If so, this is an issue that I believe has something to do with Bonjour but which I've not been able to diagnose the cause of. However, there is a simple work around, don't rely on the Local Hosts view of the server but rather create a "Favorite" with the explicit IP address of the server. The files appear instantly and open at normal speed.

This is one of the solutions that FM Tech Support mentioned and I implemented, but it didn't solve the problem entirely.  Just dropped elapsed time by a few seconds.

OK, so some steps to try if you want to refine the question of what's going on.

1) Do you experience the same issue when opening the database file(s) using FM Pro on the server itself? Meaning does it work correctly when everything is complete local?

2) What happens if you plugin a computer directly into the server, bypassing any networking device?

Cut down the delay in opening by cutting out the local starter file.  Not sure why it causes a delay because all it does is open one of our dbs automatically instead of the user having to do it.  However, doesn't explain files not opening at all, but going to try this for a few days on several PCs and see what happens.

Make sure the starter file is opening the hosted database explicitly using the IP address rather than a stored Local Hosts address. Make sure the starter file has a Favorite for the exact IP address and then use that to save the "Open File..." script step.

Thanks, it does on both counts.

Thanks Will.  Your suggestion did help in the short run with the elapsed time problem once I took out the local starter file from the process.  Elapsed opening time became about 1 second.  I'll need several weeks to discover if it helps with the problem of FM 16 not opening at all.
