Lenovo Hyper V Guest Locks up frequently. .

I have a Lenovo system -x3250 M6 Server that is running Windows Server 2016 Standard It has a Xeon E3-1230 v5 3.4 GHZ CPU and 16GB of Ram .

It has one Server 2016 Standard VM with 4GB of Ram and 6 VCpus. Every month or so it will services will fail like Quickbooks Database manager and rdp to the server. From Hyper V Manager i have to force a shutdown (Turn Off) as the shutdown command wont work. When i power back up I see it saying Working on updates 100% complete Don't turn off your computer. It will stay like this for hours. I reboot and same thing.

i was able to view the running processes remotely and saw Tiworker consuming a lot of cpu. So i killed it and the login screen appeared. Maybe something messed up with windows updates?

What you don't mention is the underlying storage requirement for the VM ?

If you have SLOW physical storage, Applying Windows Updates can take many hours, and the VM can appear to hang...

A physical host server with 16GB, is very small for a server, my laptop has more memory!

There are 3 users that access this server.  The Host is using 7GB of ram. So i dont see a benefit of adding more ram.

Yes, slow storage - applying updates will be slow, because they do not perform well, and provide many IOPS.

So if that's all the disks you have you'll just have to be patient for the OS to apply updates.

Thanks for this info. I update this server weekly and dont have issues updating. My concern is why its locking up and i have to force a restart. When it locks up programs that are running on the server will stop working. I can access the server files shares fine. Ping the server fine. I only know its locked up when the users cant access quickbooks in multiuser as the database manager stops as well. Host is fine only vm locks up.

i noticed i have the disk setup as dynamic . I will try to set it to fixed to see if that resolves it.

What do the error logs say on the affected VM?

There has to be a reason why the VM is locking up?

Does it need to be force restarted? That is reset in order to get back online?
