Unable to edit sharepoint documents on iPad

Unable to edit sharepoint documents on iPad -

I need to be able to access sharepoint documents from an ipad. The iPad can connect to our internal sharepoint server and can open up the sharepoint pages in the browser. The issue is that when you click/tap on the document you wish to edit it will open in the browser but you cannot edit it.
It will give you the error below: (received this in both safari and chrome)

"To open this workbook, your computer must have a version of Microsoft Excel installed and your web browser must support opening files directly from excel in the browser"

the only workaround I have found is:

1. copy the URL to of the SharePoint site you want to be able open documents from
2. open the office application you want to be able to open SharePoint documents from e.g. excel , word
3. tap on 'Add a place' paste in the URL and then when prompted enter in your credentials

this is a very convoluted way of accessing and editing sharepoint documents so I need to know if there is a simpler way.

There is a setting in SharePoint libraries where you can force all files to open in the local application rather than web application/browser.

In Library settings, Advanced Settings scroll down the page to find the File Open settings; there are 3 options; Default, Browser and Application; choose the option for opening the application.

This will affect all files and all users of the library. If you only want certain files to work like this then create a separate library for those files.

This has worked for me in the past on a desktop but don't know if it would work on the iPad. Worth a try as the setting can easily be put back to previous setting if not.

just in case the mobile version of SharePoint pages doesn't work well on your iPad, you may simply try requesting Desktop Version for the page, if you are using  Safari browser on the iPad.
