WIN10 in place upgrade
Hi Experts,
in the past it was possible to upgrade a WIN7 machine to WIN10.
Now I have some issues with it.
Can you confirm this, its still possible to do an inplace upgrade for free ?

The free upgrade ended long ago. Legally it is not possible.

are you sure, 6 month ago I did it already...
I am positive that doing so is not legal, yes.
Upgrade ended July 2016. The "assistive technologies ended December 2017.

Since it isn't legal to upgrade, that's where the conversation ends for me.

i found out the same as Cliff posted - so no, you can't have it for free - MS is getting low on funds lol
Something to consider:
If you were Microsoft and you wanted to maximize profits, you would want people to adapt win10 and not stay with win7. Win10 allows MS to sell telemetry data more easily than with win7, it is an entry point to the app store, and it promotes the usage of a Microsoft account, further bonding you with Microsoft. So even if they still gave it away for free, they will quite surely earn more money with it than with win7 users.
If you were Microsoft, how long would you let people upgrade for free? I would do it for at least as long as there are more win7 users than win10 users. That is still the case, not before the beginning of 2019 will the number of win10 users surpass win7 (see this for an estimation)
Technically, it should be no problem to stop users from using their old win7 keys to activate win10, so why doesn't Microsoft stop them? Ask yourself if they want to stop them. Yes, as Cliff points out, there is an FAQ which clearly says "The Windows 10 free upgrade through the Get Windows 10 (GWX) app ended on July 29, 2016.", and so is their aggressive "get win 10 ('GWX') campaign" with all its popups, but else, they haven't changed a thing, there is no technical hurdle to still upgrade - what you see does not normally happen and will not happen if you use a win10 setup and present a win7 key.
If I were MS, I wouldn't admit that so many people are still using win7 and I wouldn't admin either that I still make win7->win10 free conversions possible for that reason. But I would make them possible as well until the user base is finally strong enough to push the old win7 to retirement.
So ask Microsoft. They say "The Windows 10 free upgrade through the Get Windows 10 (GWX) app ended on July 29, 2016", but do they imply that each and any way to upgrade now is illegal?
