ASKER

It completed but now it Stuck on desktop screen. Struggling with getting task manager to load now
If you can do anything in the desktop screen, you might be able to do a Repair Install. You need the Windows 7 DVD or a working Recovery partition.

Is there any software I can boot into that can at least give me access to the files on the drive so I can copy it on to an external drive ?
At this point, easiest to put the drive in a USB carrier, mount that on a working machine and recover the files.

Even if you manage to boot the problem machine in some way (doubtful) you would have to get the files on a USB hard drive, so just use a carrier as described.
you can boot from a live cd, like knoppix http://knoppix.net/
or from a windows live cd https://superuser.com/questions/1178267/windows-10-non-persistent-installation-live-iso
