Unable to type username x secret x without the Cisco router erroring out.

Unable to execute "username X secret X" on a Cisco 2600 series router that I just bought. I purchased another Cisco 2600 from a different seller and it works just fine. The error I get is "Invalid input detected at '^' marker." where the ^ is located on the "secret" word. Please be aware I am pretty new to Cisco so any help would be greatly appreciated.

1.  Have you done a complete hardware reset on the unit?

2.  Is the firmware up-to-date and is the version same or higher than the firmware on your other unit?

Cisco 2600s are pretty old. The End of Life for those was Aug. 2, 2012. They may not have the secret command on them, use the "?" and see what commands are available. username X ?

Yes they are old but I have 2 of them and the second one lets me do username xxx secret xxx without any issues. Which is I am confused about the first one. Could it be firmware? And if so how do I get a newer version?

Dr. Klahn, I have done a complete clean of the device. When I run the command show ver on the first device (device that does not have the problem) is shows Version 12.2 (8r) on the other device (the one that is having the issues) it shows 12.2 (12c). Not sure if that is what you are asking about.

Unfortunately you probably can't get a newer version of the firmware at this point. It's been to long since support expired for it. I would just look at what commands are available with  username X ? and try and make something work.
