Microsoft updates failing and having to revert on SBS 2011

SBS 2011 : for the last 3 months it keeps on trying to run the Microsoft security updates and fails
Trying tonight to install just the 2008-09 security update manually, it foes through the process and upon reboot I get the message
"Failure configuring Windows Updates - Reverting changes - Do not turn off your computer"
This has been now going on for 90 minutes and still no end in sight.

Stubborn updating problems will usually be cured using the inplace upgrade process (start server setup from within windows, select "upgrade" (of course it will remain on the same OS and keep files and settings as well as installed programs). However, as this is a DC, I would be careful with it and first see, if you can make anything of the update logs. You could share some error lines of your c:\windows\windowsupdate.log file.

If we don't find the error, it might be necessary to do the inplace upgrade, which will require precautions (like having a working backup to resort to).

I have suspended all automatic updates on the server after it eventually rebooted after 5 hours of "reverting".
Since the server is in production I will need to find some open time to run these diags and generate a couple of good backups
I have also downloaded the "System Update Readiness tool" for Windows 2008 R2 and will try it unless someone tells me it is a bad idea.

All this started with the July MS updates and I have another SBS 2011 with the same issue. Thanks a lot Microsoft
