The attached image of the iPhone shows the screen is raised up and I worry it is dangerous even to handle it.
It still works as a radio and alarm clock. But, the Home button is broken so the phone is barely usable.
Any idea what's going on?
Could the battery be getting ready to explode? I have not idea and hoped someone on EE might be able to offer some advice.
Thanks.

Without seeing the image, I can tell you that no home button makes it pretty much worthless. As for the screen being "raised up" that could be from a bad repair/replacement job, OR it could possibly be a fake iPhone. If this is something you are looking at on eBay, I would look elsewhere.

Home button is broken <-- and the phone is very old. I am not even sure if it uses the new IOS. I do not think so.
It is not worth repairing, so now is the time to upgrade to a new phone.
I guess my question was specific. It is owned by a friend who uses it for listing to the radio and an alarm clock, and not much else, due to the Home button failure. I worried there could be a battery degradation that caused the problem which means it is truly too hot to handle.
So, I will take Paul's advice and suggest it be thrown away.
Has anyone ever heard of a battery getting larger?
