In Gmail, there is a gear icon in the top right.  Click on that.
Select Settings, general tab, and scroll down until you see the  Images section.
Choose “Ask before displaying external images” and click on Save Changes.  

I was reading that Gmail has started automatically opening images.  Watch for incoming spam taking advantage of this.
