distribution group, active directory, exchange, office 365

I have an old universal distribution group( investors) having email address as investors@domain.com

i had to create new universal distribution group(investors1) having email address as investors1@domain.com

but my boss wants to add investors@domain.com as an additional email in the new universal distribution group which is investors1

now my problem is i cant remove the old DL email address neither delete the old DL as it is being used by external people

so i was planning to put forwarding from old DL to neW DL

Is there any command i have to use or can use GUI

as in our company  AD objects on premise are synced through AAD sync to office 365

OR is there any method to create mail contact or something

basically he wants both the email address

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

add the group investor into the group investor1, and add all user from investor to investor1.

basically nested the group.

You can't set a forward on a distribution list. If you want all the emails from the old DL (investors@domain.com) go to the new DL (investor1@domain.com), then you will need to create a mail rule (Transport rule). Is it necessary to have both of the DLs? If so look at the screen shot for a Mail rule you can create in the Exchange Admin Center.

I think it would be easiest to delete the old DL and then just add the old DL's address to the new DL.

since you have to keep the old DL and you cant set a forward on a DL, you will need to create the rule I mentioned if you want all the emails from old DL to go to new DL. Also you can add the new DL to the old DL and still get the emails.

Create rule

or

add the new DL to the old DL (nested)

Putting investors1 in the investors group should do the trick.

But why can't you delete old group? External people are just sending to the email address.

After deleting the old group, you can add the email address to the new group.

If you put investors1 in the investor group, both email addresses will still work.

Yes both DLs will get the emails if sent to the new DL. Note everything sent to the old DL will also be sent to the user in the new DL.
