A printer is a peripheral which makes a persistent human readable representation of graphics or text on paper or similar physical media. Gently clean the feed rollers with a lint free cloth dampened with Isopropyl Alcohol.
Clean any areas you can, and then shut down the printer, restart and try scanning.
Things may have dried out form lack of use and it may need repair (not economical, so consider replacing).
I use my own 8610 all the time and it continues to work well after 3 or so years.
