You do not need to install any antivirus software on iPhone.
Yes he is absolutely right, there is no need of installing anti-virus and anti malware on iPhone.
CORRECT.  There is NO anti-virus or anti-malware apps for iOS on the Apple App Store.

The reasons for this are that Apple do not allow apps to scan each other's data and interaction between apps is very limited.  Therefore an AntiVirus app would only be able to really scan itself which renders it pretty useless.

Apple also heavily audit and check all apps on the App Store before they are released and will withdraw them if there is any sign of improper behaviour.

I'm not saying that iOS is absolutely malware free but it is heavily controlled and as long as you only install apps from trusted developers with established reputations the risks are low.

The ability of a virus to impact iOS is very slim but Malware or Fake apps which may collect personal data do exist on the Apple App Store and are removed when reported.

Search for "sandbox" apps.

Thanks for all the comments. What are some of the recommended anti virus software for Android phones?

You can find antivirus apps for Android but they are useless because all apps are separated... they are sandbox apps as well as on iPhone so antivirus cannot access them or do any action even if they might detect a malware or so.

When installing any app, just use official Google Play and check access permissions of the app before installing. That's my recommendation.

This applies for Google Play as well.

Hi, saw some anti virus software like trend micro (available for android and IOS), malwarebytes (android). How helpful are these software for the phones?

They’re not really helpful. In fact they’re a waste of time. Particularly on iOS they do nothing useful. Avoid.
