VMware Converter (free from the VMware site) does this. The current version does Windows 7 and I think Windows XP as well.
Install the Converter on the Physical Machine and convert. It has been a while, but I have successfully used Converter before.

Thank you for your fast replies.
Is it for free?
My friend does not have Vcenter on his desktop. Is he still able to run these images on his desktop?

Convertor is free (always has been)
If you want to virtualize this, you will have to pay for some sort of VMWare Licence, whether it be ESXi or VMware workstation.
For the virtualizing application, yes, you must pay.
For the Converter software, I think it is free but then you need the application to run it.

Yes. I use the paid products for reliability over the long term.
Or if you, you know, just want it to work properly, with a great GUI which is simple and deals with everything seamlessly for you.
You could try Microsoft's Disk2vhd - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/disk2vhd
Works fine for XP/Win 7. I've heard it also works under Windows 10 but I've never tried it

You can use vmware image with free Oracle virtualbox or convert it to pure VDI image with vboxmanage, included in virtualbox set.
