Preferred cloud antispam/antivirus service?

We have multiple customers with on-prem Exchange servers interested in adding cloud antispam to their arsenal, but we’re facing a ‘tyranny of choice’ situation where we’re not sure which service to recommend, because they all look pretty good.

What’s your preferred cloud antispam/AV service, and why?  Conversely, is there a service you had bad experiences with, or otherwise avoid—if so, why?  We’ve been looking at Barracuda, Mimecast, and the Email Laundry, but we’re certainly open to other options too.

The solution needs to provide inbound & outbound antispam filtering with a quarantine feature, antivirus scanning, DKIM/SPF/DMARC support, attachment sandboxing, link following, etc.  No cloud archive is needed.  We’re a small shop, so access to a competent support team is also a must, preferably one based in the US or Europe.

Unfortunately, O365 is not an option for these customers—we have to stay onprem, so this product must support onprem Exchange.

Thanks, everyone!

With so many requirements you might not find you have many options.

Personally, I use an On-prem spam filter.  Two options - spam filtering through my UTM appliance (which is Untangle) and spam filtering through a seperate appliance such as the Email Filter Appliance.

Untangle offers paid and free versions and supports both (though the free version has more restrictive support).

EFA is community support as it's open source.  I don't use it, but I've heard good things from other consultants I work with.

With Untangle, you need to tweak the settings.  The default settings are not terribly good, but on the other hand, you don't end up with many false positives.  Over the years, I've tweaked my settings well above their "high sensitivity" level and now RARELY get an actual spam message in my inbox.  I do get false positives, but the digest is available 24x7 and emailed once a day and once something it whitelisted, it's safe (my false positives are most often new members of a mailing list and subscription confirmation requests).

You can try both free to see if they meet your needs.
I'm VERY happy with Vircom's modusCloud solution and I've got a lot of my clients using it as well. I've been using them for 15+ years now and their solution has done nothing but improve over the years. (I initially installed their modusMail and modusGate solutions on-premises and then moved to their modusCloud solution.)

We use Appriver here at my company. It works well, reasonably priced, 24x7 tech support, and has the features you want. I would suggest talking to their support rep and inform them of your desires and allow them to tell you what they can do to assist you, but we have been using them for years and we are happy with the level of Spam, Malware, and virus protection they provide and catch. Also the web interface it easy to maneuver and learn. Also you can get a POC trial to see what you think and all it takes is you to point your external MX record their servers to start filtering inbound mailbox traffic, outbound will require you to add their smarthost address to your send connector for outbound filtering. Very simple, non-intrusive, and not real changes on your exchange other then changing the smarthost on the send connector. See below link for site and phone number if interested:
