Is there a video card out there for a Dell XPS 8700 running Windows 10 pro that will allow me to use a thunderbolt 3 monitor from LG?

i have a DELL XPS 8700 desktop and have a decent video card in it now. I have upgraded it to 32GB RAM and it has been a great computer. I love this desktop and I am running windows 10 pro with all the latest updates installed. I have 2 new monitors that use what they call Thunderbolt 3, this port looks like a USB -C port. The monitors work great on the macbook pro, and the other Dell XPS laptops that have a TB3 port.

However, I am wanting to buy a video card that will support these monitors with a TB3 cable (LG Monitor). I don't do anything like gaming, mostly just word documents, visual studio and visual studio code. Is there a video card I can buy and install that will give me a TB3 port for the new LG monitors?

Thanks in advance

There does seem to be cards that will support TB3 for the PC.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007709&IsNodeId=1&Description=thunderbolt%203%20video%20card&name=Desktop%20Graphics%20Cards&Order=BESTMATCH&isdeptsrh=1

But many of them are way overkill for what you want to do it sounds like.

I am going to research it a little more as I have not had to experience TB3 monitors yet.

Found this on Amazon as well for almost $200 cheaper than those on Newegg.  But not sure if it is compatible with your system.

Oh...and what video card do you have/or are using?
What video out ports are available on it?

Thank you, but those are a bit out of my price range and those look like WAY more than what I need. I write a bit of code, send emails and update word documents. I run a few windows VMs, but again, I don't do any 3d graphic or need to render quickly.

How do the external options work? How would those connect to my desktop?

Why not use hdmi, DisplayPort to connect the desktop to the monitor?.

How does that external device connect to my windows desktop? I watched the video, but nothing showed me how to connect it to my existing desktop.

The PCI-e x16 on your system might not support the cards with thetb3 ports, often they require PCI-e 3.x ........

Please clarify..
There often are multiple inputs to the monitor. You would use one of those possibly through getting a displayport to adapter....

My current video card shows up in Device Manager as "NVIDIA GeForce GT 720". I have a DVI-D, VGA and HDMI port on this video card.

On the LG monitors what specific model do you have?

As Arnold has stated you may be able to use a different port  like HDMI?

ASKER
No, this LG only has TB3. LG 21.5" HD 4K Ultra Fine LED Monitor Black.

When we plug it into the XPS laptops that have a TB 3 port, it works great. It says MAC only in the title, but it works with the Windows 10 XPS laptops that have a TB3 port.

I just tired using an HDMI to TB3 adapter and plugging it into the back of my LG. It does not work that way. I think the adapters are designed as a 1 way street of HDMI > TB3, so it takes HDMI in only.

I don't see how these external devices would help me as the appear to require a TB3 connection between the "dock" and the computer. My issue is I have a great desktop, but it has only: HDMI, DVI-D and VGA on the current video card.

I want a video card that has TB3 and HDMI or just TB3.
arnold

Mac only means tb3 native Mac graphics peripheral port .....

Since Apple tb3 licensing...... The newer models for graphics intensive ......

If not mistaken your XPS 8700 is about five six years old. Do not think there is a tb3 graphics card for PCI-e port pre 3.x

I don't think it is that old, but that's OK. If there is no way to get a TB3 card, I will just get a new monitor for $200. Thanks anyhow.

You have to look at the specs. Using the service tag
The item of importance is the PCI-e colors available
Then if your system has usb3 look at usb3 to tb3 .....

In short you have to go through hoops....

Owners manual attached. I am guessing the slot is PICe v1, but letting the experts check it out. Maybe I missed something.
