The question seems pretty incomplete as it depends on many factors which are not reported:

-how much load is on the storage that the server's virtual hard disk uses?
-are you talking about patching just windows, or windows and other Microsoft applications such as SQL server/sharepoint/office/...?

Hi Mcknife,

There is no load on the virtual hard disk, less than 30%.

Issue is purely on windows MS  patching, and not any other applications.
I was not asking about load on the vhdx, but about load on the storage where the VHDX is on. For example, if you have a lot of other VMs that use the same storage, you cannot expect good performance. How many other VMs use the same storage?

Thanks for the prompt response, slowness causing issue only on windows 2016 servers during patch installation , no performance issue found for other windows version. Is there any  workaround ??
I agree, we've have seen the same at present!

Windows 2016 seems far slower to patch than any previous version of Windows Server, and seems to be getting much slower, just the general scan, install etc

yes sir! we both are on the same page.
Is there any MS article for the same or any workaround /recommendation
Still struggling with it, you will see if you Google, it's a popular discussion!
It is slow with 2016, I agree, but nowhere next to several hours. We have several 2016 Servers here and if you like, I can look up the reboot times to see how long it took to install and restart.
What kind of server is this?  I have a box running "Netwrix" and it will take hours to install one patch.  I have to run MSCONFIG, uncheck all of the Netwrix services, reboot and then run the patch.  You might want to try the same with MSCONFIG...check Hide Microsoft services under the services tab and then uncheck anything unnecessary, reboot and then try patching.

No Antivurus installed on our Golden Master!
I suppose it does help to ratify how many patches and how out of date!
My comment also applies to Windows Defender, which will be on your Server 2016 master, unless it was specifically removed.

Set-MpPreference -DisableRealtimeMonitoring $true

What we've found is Windows Server 2016 halts and stops, gives an error, and needs to be rebooted to apply patches....

this continues over several hours.

It is certainly not as quick or "clean" as 2012 etc
That's very interesting. I don't want to highjack the OP's question, but I'd like to learn more about your issue.
