Unable to move VM image back to original host.

Over the weekend I move a VM image from one server to another so that I could do some work on the host but when I went to move the image back to the original host the host was not in the list of host I could move it to. The Host that the image was originally on is part of a 3 host cluster and the host I moved the image to is not a part of that cluster but a stand alone ESXi server. When I went to move the VM all hosts were listed including the ones that were not part of the cluster but after moving the VM image and now trying to move the image back none of the hosts in the cluster show but all the host that are stand alone do show up.

I am trying to do this all in vSphere so maybe there is a setting I don't know about but I need to move this VM Image back to the original host. How can I do this?

VM images are VM Guest machines.

So you cannot move a VM (Guest)  from one host to another.

You need to check networking, are you trying to do this Live (vMotion) or cold .

I'm doing this cold because the vMotion was not available due to the hosts not being configured for that nor are they a part of the cluster. I thought this has something to do with licensing so I am in the process of getting additional licenses to cover the 3 additional hosts I have created on the network.

I really don't know what you mean about VM Guest machines. Do you mean that those hosts are just guests to the VM environment and if I license those hosts they will have visibility to the licensed hosts?

Everything is running fine for now so I am not that worried however I would like to move those images back to the host that is currently in the cluster.

On a side note how do you configure the Guest hosts for vMotion when I license the hosts?
I was trying to get you to understand naming conventions.

ESXi server is the Host.

The Host - Hosts Guest VMs. (which you call images!)

I think what you call images are Guest Virtual Machines.

Yes, that is what I am calling the host is the ESXi server and the VM image is the actual VM that sits on the host so I guess you would call them Guests instead of VM images correct? I am just going by what VM calls the VM when you do Migrations.

I am confused by your statement that I cannot move a VM guest to another host. I asked that question a few cases ago and you said I could move the guest to another host and I have seen it done but more inside the cluster VS a stand alone Host.

So just to get this naming issue set

The Host = ESXi Physical Server
Guest = VM that is running on the Host (ESXi Physical Server)

Is that correct?

OK, I have 3 hosts that are clustered which we started out with and it has been working but performance was bad so we purchased 3 new servers to add to the cluster but first wanted to test out the new servers so Installed ESXi 6.0 onto all three and added them to the vSphere console. Now when I look at the tree in vSphere I see the three servers that are clustered in a group and below that I see the 3 three new servers as stand alone servers.

On two of the three servers I have added the two QNAP NAS devices and just recently added the Unisphere to those machines. I can now see all three storage containers on both machines.

The one Host that I am trying to move the guests back to I found that they did not configure two paths on the server correctly so I followed your directions and added two paths and when saving it said that this might disrupt the iSCSI connection temporarily which was OK since I moved all the guests off that machine. Now when I shut down the guest on the new machine and choose Migrate, VM image then hit next it does not populate with all hosts just the stand alone hosts and none of the clustered machines.

Is that what you are asking?
Sorry, not really - it needs to be more detailed as to how they are setup, networking, shared storage.....

It does not really give me any more information than we have already.

Sorry, I had an emergency with our network for the past week and a half and haven't had a chance to work on anything else.

As to what you are asking for I really don't know what to give you. At this point I have been following your suggestions on how to add datastores to two new hosts which I was successful and I was also successful on moving my guests over to these new hosts with the iSCSI connections to two QNAP NAS storage devices and one EMC Unity 300 SAN. Can you please give me a hint on what you are looking for?

These new hosts are not licensed at this moment but I am in the process of getting the licenses, actually I have already purchased them but when I look at my VM site it shows that I only renewed and not added more licenses so I am working with my vendor to get this squared away but once I get them I will try to add them to the hosts.

I figured out my issue and have resolved this problem. I needed to license the server in order for it to be seen by vSphere properly.
