I have a problem with my desktop is not showing items that I save to it until I click refresh

Why does this happen?  It most likely (not all the time) happens because it is slow writing to the Users folder.

1. As suggested above, run Disk Cleanup.  Also, when the Cleanup Window opens, select Cleanup System files (button at the bottom of the window).  When the wizard has run, select All items (Default is not all items) and say OK. This will take a while.

2. Open Advanced System Settings in Control Panel System, Advanced Tab.  Click on the Settings Button in the Performance section. Visual Effects Default is set to let Windows choose. Try "Adjust for best performance"  This may reduce the video load while you are writing files. You can always change it back.
Also, if and only if your computer has a hard drive, run Administrator tools, disk defragmenter on both drives. Again only on hard drives not SSD drives
Gentlemen

Let me try these steps and I will report the results. Thank you.
Of our suggestions above, Disk Cleanup and Disk Defrag (Hard Drive) are the first two to do before digging deeper. Do these two and let us know. Thank you.
Thank you gentlemen. I did what Sajid suggested. I did the disk clean up with no luck but after I did the sfc/scannow it required a start and I don't to jinx things but it worked after verifying. One question though, why did this happen?
I guess I jinxed myself. The solution worked for a few times then I had to go back to REFRESH.

Andrew-I did what you suggested on deleting the icon cache and I got a warning message . see screen capture. Please advise me on how to proceed.

Thank you,

The error message you've uploaded shows that you were trying to open the file. Could it be that you double clicked it, instead of clicking it once and then pressing the delete key?

The IconCache.db file IS a system file, however, it is safe to delete and when having problems with desktop icons, can often fix the problem. After you delete it, restart Windows 10 and a fresh IconCache.db file will be created automatically.

If you need further help with this problem, just post again here.

I just want to make sure that I understand what you want me to do. First, you are correct. I did double click but not clicked delete. So when I click once on it , Then I can delete it and it will regenerate it self after restarting?
Hi Basem,

So when I click once on it , Then I can delete it and it will regenerate it self after restarting?

Yes, perfectly correct. If you just delete, then it will go to your recycle bin anyway, but you won't need to restore it because as you've understood, it will regenerate itself after restarting - you can verify that after restarting by simply going back to your profile folder and you will see that it exists again after a reboot.

I am sorry but the solution semi works. It does save to desktop on every other capture basis. When I refresh then it appears. I guess I just have to live with it.
Thank you anyway.
Did you try Disk Defrag to improve performance?
Yes I did.
John

Furthermore, I did adjust for best performance with no luck either.
So here are steps (some repetitive):

1. From an Admin Command prompt, run SFC /SCANNOW.
2. Then dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Restart and test.
3. Windows 10 Repair Install and Keep Everything.

Go to the Media Creation Link:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
For Windows 10 V1803:

If the Repair will not run as per above:
Create a USB Windows Installation key and then run Setup on the USB Key.
This will launch the Repair and proceed normally.

Test again.
No worries Basem. I guess it depends on how annoying you're finding the behavior to be. My next suggestion would be to run the DISM command I included earlier, but I'm not sure that will do much good either as this could also be related to your graphics card and drivers you're using as well, so I hesitate to recommend running an image restorehealth process for now. Too many "could be" scenarios here. Even hard drive and RAM fragmentation could contribute to this type of behavior.

Is this only when you are taking screenshots and saving to desktop? When an icon fails to appear, does a quick press of the F5 key on your keyboard make the icon appear as well? If so, and if it were me, I'd likely just live with it as you said, but it is of course up to you. Troubleshooting further could require a fair bit of work for very little reward.
Actually, I just had another thought Basem. Before you do any further troubleshooting, please describe step by step what you are doing when this behavior occurs. I've thought of something in the back of my mind, but I want to see if it applies to your scenario first before exploring it with you.

For example, list steps like this.

1. I open this program and then do this
2. then I do this
3. then I do this
4. then I save to desktop
5. then I wait x amount of time and no icon appears

That sort of thing - just so we know exactly how this is happening for you and which software is involved.
