Patch panel ports and switches, 1 to 1 ratio?

Do patch panel ports need to have a corresponding port on the switch? So if you have 24 port patch panel you need a 24 port switch? Are there any devices that allow you to have virtual ports from a patch panel into a switch to reduce the number of cables needed?

for physycal connectivity there is no alternative... but u can use wireless accesspoint's ot sitches at second end to reduce cabling at patch panel..and u can create vlans to split the networks.

Ah ok. Otherwise I have to buy additional switches+patch panels and put the switches in parity mode?  
vLANS as in subnets?
