Server notifications if hard drive fails software raid
Hi I have some servers that are using software raid on Server 2012 R2. I was looking for a software program to email me if one of the drives goes south.
Thanks all.
Thanks all.
Most vendors use LSI/Avago with a few alternatives out there.
Whatever the vendor's server product set up the management software with the RAID component then configure event notification to e-mail on certain events.
Two things:
1: We stopped using software RAID except in cluster nodes years and years ago
2: In our experience, when a disk fails with a software RAID setup the server locks up
Intel RMM, HPE iLO Advanced, Dell iDRAC Enterprise, or other out-of-band with KVM over IP management is an absolute must IMNSHO.

I think they are dell mainly, but I don't have perc controllers, just onboard stuff, some custom builds. Was looking for something generic that works with the OS
Is LSI/Avago a program?

Do you use software raid through drivers for a hardware controller card, or real Software RAID through Windows Dynamic Disks or Storage Spaces?
The on board will either be Intel RSTe or LSI. On some server boards the RAID setting in the BIOS can be set to one or the other.
I don't have a Dell in the shop otherwise I could check on it. I don't remember seeing such a setting.
The Dell OpenManage software should work with both on board and PERC RAID setups.

I used the Windows software, like disk management and mirror drive.
Philip, I didn't use the dell setup, just the windows, unless I ca use the openmanage without having it that way.
Thanks all

As in creating the mirrored drive _within_ the Windows operating system via Disk Management? Oh.

Philip, yes

I was going to suggest OpenManage, but I don't think it will work w/o the PERC controller
Well I've come across this post which explains how to setup a script to create a event log event for soft raid failure
https://www.eventsentry.com/blog/2012/02/how-to-make-the-windows-softwa.html
With a little tweaking you should be able to setup email/SMS notifications
I'll keep looking for a bit, but you may end up having to "roll your own solution"
